Milosevic's Death
Former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic was found dead last Saturday in his cell at the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The 64-year-old had been on trial there since February 2002.Born in provincial Pozarevac in 1941,he was the second son of a priest and a school teacher.
Both of his parents died when he was still a young adult. The young Milosevic was"untypical", says Slavoljub Djukic, his unofficial biographer. He was"not interested in sports, avoided excursions(短途旅行)and used to come to school dressed in the old-fashioned way一white shirt and tie."One of his old friends said,he could "imagine him as a station-master or punctilious(一丝不苟的)civil servant."Indeed that is exactly what he might have become, had he not married Mira. She was widely believed to be his driving force.
At university and beyond he did well.He worked for various firms and was a communist party member. By 1986 he was head of Serbia's Central Committee. But still he had not yet really been noticed. It was Kosovo that gave him his chance. An autonomous province of Serbia,Kosovo was home to an Albanian majority and a Serbian minority. In 1989,he was sent there to calm fears of Serbians who felt they were discriminated against. But instead he played the nationalist card and became their champion. In so doing, he changed into a ruthless(无情的)and determined man. At home with Mira he plotted the downfall of his political enemies. Conspiring(密谋)with the director of Serbian TV,he mounted a modern media campaign which aimed to get him the most power in the country.
He was elected Serbian president in 1990.In 1997,he became president of Yugoslavia. The rest of the story is well-known:his nationalist card caused Yugoslavia's other ethnic groups to fight for their own rights, power and lands.Yugoslavia broke up when four of the six republics declared independence in 1991.War started and lasted for years and millions died. Then Western countries intervened.NATO bombed Yugoslavia, and he eventually stepped down as state leader in 2000.Soon after this,Serbia's new government, led by Zoran Djindjic, arrested him and sent him to face justice at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in the Hague.
Which of the following is NOT true of the young Milosevic?
A:He dressed in a pretty old-fashioned way.
B:He was not interested in sports.
C:He often avoided excursions.
D:He was extremely ambitious.

Tales of the Terrible Past
It is not the job of fiction writers to analyze and interpret history.Yet by writing about the past in a vivid and compelling manner, storytellers can bring earlier eras to life and force readers to consider them seriously.Among those taking on the task of recounting history are some black writers who attempt to examine slavery from different points of view.
Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison deals specifically with the legacy of slavery in her book Beloved. The main character in this novel,a former slave called Sethe, lives in Ohio in the years following the Civil War,but she cannot free herself from her horrific memories.Through a series of flashbacks and bitter reminiscences, the reader learns how and why Sethe escaped from the plantation she had lived on;the fate of her husband, who also tried.to escape;and finally, what happened to the child called Beloved.Morrison's scenes of torture and murder are vivid and strongly convey the desperation of the slaves and the cruelty of their owners.
Charles Johnson's Middle Passage approaches slavery from a different, yet no less violent, vantage point. His main character,Rutherford Calhoun,is a ne'er-do-well free black American who stows away on a slave ship bound for Africa to collect its"cargo".Put to work after he is discovered,Calhoun witnesses first- hand the appalling conditions in which the captured Africans are transported. When they finally rebel and take over the ship,he finds himself in the middle-and is forced to come to terms with who he is and what his values are.
Neither Beloved nor Middle Passage is an easy read, but both exemplify African American writers, attempts to bring significant historical situations alive for a modern audience.
Beloved is set______.
A:on a slave ship
B:on a plantation before the Civil War
C:in Ohio after the Civil War
D:in an African town

The Mystery of Clones
Scientists have cloned goats, cats, cows, pigs and mice. Now it has been suggested by many commentators and scientists that it might be ethically acceptable to clone existing people in certain cases. One possibility is generating a replacement for a dying relative. All such possibilities, however, makes more and more people concerned that it would be possible that the clone is subjected to expectations and limitations based on the family's knowledge of the genetic"twin",so he or she would not be treated as an individual with independent personality. For the reason that human personality is only partly determined by genes, those assumptions might not be right. The clone of a shy person might behave quite differently if he or she is brought up in a family with encouraging atmosphere.Clones of writers, scholars, scientists or athletes are very likely to choose different careers because of chance event in early life.
Some researchers have suggested the idea that couples,in which one part is infertile, might choose to make a copy of one or the other partner. But the notion raises the concerns that the child who is a copy of just one of a couple might not treat naturally, and it is not in the interests of the resulting kid. Moreover, the treatments of all known types of infertility are available nowadays;conventional therapies seem more ethnically acceptable to ordinary people's way of thinking,so the majority of population strongly opposed to allowing cloned human embryos(胚胎)to develop.
However, the positive side of the cloning technology cannot be denied, for instance, cloning from cultured cells will provide essential medical opportunities.Scientists are trying to grow an embryo, cloned from a single cell of a human being with goals to design therapies for diseases which are currently untreatable.
Of course, people's predictions about this new technology might be all wrong, because social attitudes change and unexpected developments take place.Only time will tell. But biomedical researchers who are dedicated to finding the potential of cloning have plenty to do.Maybe someday soon,a human will be cloned, and mankind will embark on a scientific and moral journey whose destination is not under his own control. Or maybe one day you will be happy to have a clone of your own.
Which of the following uses of cloning is justifiable, according to the passage?
A:To have a clone of one's own.
B:To replace a dying relative.
C:To help infertile couples to have a child.
D:To cure currently untreatable diseases.

Electronic Teaching
The potential of closed-circuit television and other new electronic teaching tools is so great that it is fascinating to visualize"the school of tomorrow".
Televised lessons will originate from a central building having perhaps four or five master studios. The lessons will be carried into classrooms all over a city,or even an entire country.
After a televised lesson has been given, the classroom teacher will take over for the all-important"follow-up"period.The students will ask any troublesome questions, and difficult points will
be cleared up through discussion.
The teacher in the classroom will have additional electronic tools. On the teacher's desk, the traditional chalk and erasers will have been replaced by a multiple-control panel and magnetic tape players. The tape machines will run pre-recorded lessons which pupils will follow by headphones. The lessons will be specifically geared to the students' levels of ability. For instance, while the class as a whole studies history, each student will receive an individual history lesson, directed to his particular level of ability.
Should question arise, the students will be able to talk directly to the teacher on individual intercoms without disturbing the rest of the class. In this way,the teacher will be able to conduct as many as three classes at the same time.
With the rapid development of computer science, students will be aided with specially prepared multi-media software to study their subjects better. Homework will possibly be assigned and handed in via electronic mail system. Students can even take examinations on their computer linked with the teachers' and get the score instantly. They will get certificates or diplomas if they pass all the required examinations. Experts believe that this type of education will be very popular in the years ahead.
When having lessons,the students will_______.
A:always listen to the same pre-recorded lessons together
B:usually have individual lessons according to their ability levels
C:control the multiple-control panel and magnetic tape players
D:receive face-to-face instructions from the teacher in the same classroom

The Worker' s Role in Management
Traditionally , it has been the workers 'role to work and management's role to manage.Managers have planned and directed the firm' s operations with little thought of consulting the labor force.Managers have rarely felt compelled (被迫的) to obtain the workers ' opinions or to explain their decisions to their employees. At most , companies have provided " suggestion boxes " in which workers could place ideas for improving procedures. In recent years , however , many management specialists have been arguing that workers are more than sellers of labor-they have a vital stake in the company and may be able to make significant contributions to its management.Furthermore , major company decisions profoundly affect workers and their dependents. This is particularly true of plant closings , which may put thousands on the unemployment lines.Should workers , then , play a stronger role in management?
Workers should have a role in management. At the very least , the labor force should be informed of major policy decisions ( A common complaint among rank-and-file workers is the lack of information about company policies and actions).Between 1980 and 1985 about five million workers were the victims of plant closings and permanent layoffs(失业) often with no warning. At least 90 days ' notice ought to be given in such instances so that workers have time to adjust.Management should consult workers before closing a plant , because the workers might be able to suggest ways of improving productivity and reducing costs and might be willing to make concessions that will help keep the plant operating.
It should become a general practice to include workers in some managerial decision making. There ought to be representatives of the workers on the firm ' s board of directors or other major policymaking groups. If rank-and-file workers are given a voice in the planning and management of the work flow , they will help to make improvements , their morale will rise , and their productivity will increase. As a further incentive , they must be given a share in the company's profits. This can be done through employee stockownership plans, bonuses , or rewards for efficiency and productivity. Finally , when a plant can no longer operate at a profit, the workers should be given the opportunity to purchase the plant and run it themselves.
